Recently I had a gauranteed buyer for my JD 855 with attachments and was ready to buy an NH 40d w/fel & finish mower but as luck would have it the transmission let go in the wife's car and I ended up buying a new one for her. (I couldn't convince her we needed a tractor more than a car for her.) A minor set back yet again. My buyer for the JD (a family member who is taking me to the cleaners on the $$) is willing to wait until next fall (Sept/Oct) to buy the tractor. My question is; I liked the New Holland tractors for many reasons but also because they had the least amount of electronics. I really want to buy brand new and not used but I am concerned that if I wait until next season they will also go electronic like John Deere and now it looks like Kubota is on their way with the new Grand L series. I prefer to work on my tractors with a wratchet instead of a laptop. Does any one have any info if NH plans to add electronics to their new models? Thanks for your help.

If you noticed the post last month Kioti is now in the number 3 spot. Their tractor that size will not change next year and we have had nothing but good posts on the DK series.
I don't believe the Boomers are slated for a change, Art White should know as the IH are the same tractors, in that size range. ....

Don't know about bowling balls but some folks may be working on extending emission laws to tractors and maybe that's the reason for some of the gadgetry. Mass torts may be the reason for a bunch of safety gadgetry. I suspect that manufacturers are sort of driven to add this stuff rather than being captured by their marketing folks who might think tractors that look like vegamatics is just what everybody wants.
I am reasonably happy with my mid-80's tractor that is mostly gadget free and my late 80's 1/2-ton that escaped the current gadget excesses. But everything isn't all bad. I didn't take-over my dad's '70 GMC 3/4-ton with tow package. I might be able to work on the engine without a computer but you know it got 8-mpg on a good day. I know that much of the increased economy since then has been due to weight-reduction but gadgets had something to do with it. I also remember that it took a rare good day to see the mountains from my grandmother's place in San Fernando. The gadgets might have had something to do with the improved view.
Anyway, gadgets aren't all bad even if I did go from having touched virtually every moving part in my old Econoline to taking my 1/2-ton in for tune-ups. But now I can dream away about the tractor grading the drive itself with help form GPS and laser leveling and I don't have to worry about smog in the country where nobody lives. Mine is a mixed message I guess.

Most of the gagets are not related to emmissions as the Kioti will meet current and future emmissions (next round). The are pretty basic engines. The only engine they had trouble with was the DK55 in which they have used the Perkins in the states to meet emmissions. Most of the diesel improved emmissions is hardware not software related, swirl combustion chambers etc. ....

An exception to Peters comment, which I accept as accurate, is a computer controlled injector system mentioned here awhile back. The idea is that it improves on the fuel delivery of mechanical governors on initial throttle increases. My mid-80's 1710 puffs a bit when adding throttle and logging trucks on the highway puff a lot. Of course, this puffing may contribute a minuscule part to overall emissions but it's interesting.
I was reading a book where the story was set in the controversy between gasoline additives and ethanol. The story is fiction but both were termed oxygenators and both are supposed to clean up the air. I don't know if the story's science is accurate but I did learn something. I always thought ethanol gas was supposed to reduce dependence on petro fuels and had no idea that it was an emissions issue. I never could figure why ethanol gas was more expensive than regular. According to the story, refiners and engine manufacturers should be able to design engines and formulate gasoline to burn as clean as either additive, but of course that's just the story.
